Dallas Cowboys, The Past The Present and The Future If you ever buy a football team follow the Dallas Cowboys motto for success and you can't go wrong. But it wasn't always easy for the Dallas Cowboys. They have had their struggles too. Two men by the name of Clint Murchison Jr and Bedford Wynn were awarded the Dallas Cowboys franchise in 1960. Originally the Dallas franchise was called in the early stages the Steers. They wanted to be called the Rangers but name was already taken so they settled on the Cowboys. In their first season they hired Tom Landry as their coach. In their first season they were 0-11-1. Not a very good start, but the owners weren't fazed. In 1961 they won their first game of the season against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Who later would be a thorn in their side. The Cowboys struggle until they drafted a quarterback from the Naval Academy named Roger Staubach in 1964. Even though they knew he had a commitment of 4 years to the Navy, they thought the gamble would pay off. The same year they also drafted Mel Renfro. Slowly the Cowboys improved and the reached their first Super eventually losing to the Baltimore Colts on a last second field goal. The MVP of the Super Bowl was Chuck Howley the only time a losing player has been named MVP. Roger Staubach finally was given the starting job and the Cowboys became a team to reckon with. With the additions of Calvin Hill and Drew Pearson on offense the Cowboys were a regular appearance in the playoffs. Winning the 1971 Super Bowl in an exciting game. Then also appeared in 1975 Super Bowl losing to Pittsburgh. Which in the coming years would be a heated rivalry. With a lot players retiring the Dallas Cowboys trade away draft picks to the Seattle Seahawks to pick up Heisman trophy winner Tony Dorsett. Tony would make an instant impact on the Cowboys. With offensive Rookie of the year Tony Dorsett in their back field the Cowboys won the Super bowl in 1977 beating the Denver Broncos. The following year the Cowboys went back to the Super Bowl only to lose to Pittsburgh Steelers again. In 1979 Roger Staubach announced his retirement. The Cowboys struggled for the next few years and the Cowboys were sold to Jerry Jones who still owns them today. When Jerry came in he fired Tom Landry the only coach the Cowboys had ever had. Shock waves went through the organization. The fans were not happy either. I was not a Cowboy fan and the way they fired Tom was just outright wrong. Not many fans disagree with that. Years later they did the right thing and put Tom's trademark hat into the ring of honor. Jerry Jones hired his friend Jimmy Johnson. The Cowboys stock piled draft picks with trades and slowly built a very good team. They draft Emmitt Smith along with Michael Irvin and signed Troy Aikman. To make a team of three outstanding offensive players. These three would win three Super Bowls for the Cowboys. The received many draft picks when they traded star running back Hershel Walker to the Minnesota Vikings. Then Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson got into a feud with each other and the Cowboys slowly fell apart. Since then the Cowboys have Struggle a lot. In 2003 Jerry Jones brought in Bill Parcells to rebuild the program. Only time will tell if can. I am pretty sure that getting Dallas Cowboy tickets will be harder to come by as Bill gets some more superstars like Terrell Owens. Here is my My favorite Dallas Cowboys website check it out. But talking about the cowboys wouldn't be complete with out mentioning the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. They were the first cheerleaders in the NFL and Still reign Supreme Maybe that's why their America's Team.
